Hartman has once again created characters you won't forget in A BUTTERFLY IN PHILADELPHIA. A very enjoyable story and a great setting. Come along on a surprisingly poignant coming of age journey punctuated by dramatic family moments, dysfunctional dynamics, great storytelling, lots of wit, and some laughs. See how the pieces of seemingly random lives come together after a random act by a disgruntled employee at a puzzle factory. One of Hartman's gifts is not only making us laugh at ourselves but subtly revealing strength of character in unexpected places and situations.Product details

A Butterfly in Philadelphia Bruce Hartman 9780988918146 Books Reviews
Had me a bit puzzled (pun intended) in the beginning but ended up a great read!
Hard to decide whether to laugh or cry! Absolutely the funniest book I have read since Heller's "Catch-22" in 1965, and that's high praise indeed! Gary J. George author of "Death on a Desert Hillside."
I savored every moment of reading this hilarious work - I could not read it at night because my laughter on every page might wake my sleeping wife. The unlikely encounters between vastly disparate characters - and their equally unlikely occupations - are the powertrain of the novel. Bruce Hartman manages to provide narratives from many characters' points of view and keep a fast-paced cohesion to it all - much like the 1000 piece puzzles which are at the center of the yarn. Every single character lives on the brink constantly. The earthbound lunacy is reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' film Fargo. Do not miss this!
A comic novel with not one but two narrators and featuring among other characters a bird that requires the thermostat be set at 100 degrees and a mattress tester whose job it is to lie still indefinitely. This is Hartman's wildest ride yet as the story unfolds in a puzzle factory where masterpieces of Western art are cut into pieces, boxed, shrink-wrapped and sent out into a world where nothing else seems to fit! A tour de force of imagination and insight.
A Butterfly in Philadelphia is a rollicking good read! Bruce Hartman has created a large cast of eccentric and hilarious characters in this comic novel, ranging from an obese mattress tester to a tragicomic parrot, but the two narrators capture our hearts. Spencer, a 20 year old hip hop fan who works in a puzzle factory, and Lindsay, a depressed 15-year old from the suburbs, struggle to grow up, despite the obsessed and self-absorbed adults around them. Their distinctive voices guide us through the zany plot twists and satirical asides that make for laugh-out-loud reading. Hartman includes many of the literary and philosophical references we've come to expect, but he's drawn his most interesting and engaging characters yet in this novel. A fun read with a big heart!
I've had the pleasure of reading all of Bruce Hartman's books and this is by far the most unique. The characters are many and diverse but his writing style makes it easy to keep abreast of who is who without getting lost in the narrative. The plot line seems straight forward but there is an ongoing hint of surprises to come... It's hard to put down. The characters are distinct and I found each one evokes a different emotion. You will definitely love or hate most of them... some you will want to cheer and a few you will want to throat punch. You won't feel indifferent about any of them. The only words I can think of to describe it without giving the plot away are It's different, it's fun, it's a little wacky in spots but it is a great read.
Writing a review is difficult because I find that I want to describe many of the events just as someone might want to tell about a movie they just saw and thoroughly enjoyed but I'll avoid the temptation for a spoiler alert and just say This is a great book. You won't be disappointed.
This is essentially a book about stupid people doing stupid things and how they affect each other. If you like that sort of thing, you may like this book. I did not. I had trouble feeling sorry for or relating to any of the characters. I almost quit reading about halfway through, but felt that it had to get better. It did not. The plot was not compelling and the outcome was not particularly realistic. The good guys won in the end, but by then I was just glad to be able to declare victory and move on.
btw - the title implies a trilogy, but I am only aware of one other book in the trilogy...
